first spring blossoms – free Photoshop and Illustrator patterns

I can hardly wait until spring arrives.
Here are my Photoshop patterns inspired by this impatient anticipation. Since they were created in Adobe Illustrator I attached Ai pattern swatches. The source of inspiration were beautiful photos of Penelope Cruz promoting the new Mango Collection.
Anyway, the patterns are free for both personal and commercial use. If you like them I would appreciate some feedback from you (some criticism is welcome as well).

paper-cuts: free vectors and iPhone wallpapers

Today’s post is inspired by traditional folk paper-cuts. The ones you can find on old faded postcards.
I thought to link it by contrast with a shiny iPhone. The screen I dream of (high on my wish list).
Below you can find my three suggestions for iPhone wallpaper.
You can also download the vector source and use it free for both personal and commercial purpose.

stuck to patterns – freebies for Photoshop and Illustrator

Once again in a row: patterns. Boring, huh? ;) Moreover: again inspired by paper-cuts (of a different style, though) and again produced as a side effect of some other idea I was working on (to be seen soon). Inspired by paper-cuts … well, a pair of scissors would be much much cheaper than the wacom tablet I’ve just bought… (I simply must have mentioned my new dreams-come-true buy).

free photoshop and illustrator patterns

I played a bit with the flowers I used on my kokeshi dolls’ kimonos. I added some spiral stems and stroked them with one of the built-in calligraphic brush (we are in Illustrator now). As a result: two sets of patterns for Photoshop (a zipped.pat file) and Illustrator (swatches library in a zipped .ai file). I hope you find them nice and/or useful. If so feel free to download (as always both for personal and commercial use).
flower_patterns

How to install/load in patterns:

  • PS: Put the .pat file you’ve downloaded into the folder /Users/{username}/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS…/Presets/Patterns (on mac OS X) or C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop\Presets\ (on Windows)  (the dots … are there since I don’t know your PS version).
  • AI: either open the .ai file (my pattern swatches will be automatically loaded) or go to Swatches>Other Library and  choose the path to the .ai file.

Let me know what you think.

screenshots – will LittleSnapper become my friend?

When you change from a pc to a mac, one (out of the many) facility to discover is the extremely easy screenshotting. The commands below let you save screenshots of the entire screen, a selection or a single window:

  • Cmd+Shift+3: saves a screenshot of the entire screen (png) on the desktop
  • Cmd+Shift+4+select an area: saves a screenshot of an area (png) on the desktop
  • Command+Shift+4+space+click a window: saves a screenshot of a window (png) on the desktop

Plus, if you are making the screenshots at the same time you use them then there are ‘save to clipboard’ commands:

  • Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+3: copies a screenshot of the screen to the clipboard
  • Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4+select an area: copies a screenshot of a selection to the clipboard
  • Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4+space+click a window: copies a screenshot of a window to the clipboard

That’s a huge advantage already!

But… Now, what I want to explore and check if it works for me is a mac OS X application called LittleSnapper.
What I’ve discovered so far:

  • With LittleSnapper you can organize your snaps within collections and folders. Add them tags, descriptions and ratings.
  • The snaps are editable, the nondestructive vector-based annotations (highlighted/blurred areas, frames, arrows, text boxes) can be activated/deactivated while a snap is being dragged to another application.
  • You can screenshot the web address (it takes a bit longer). Then you can open the snap in the LittleSnapper built-in browser where you don’t need to use crosshairs and select an area – it’s enough to roll over the elements you want to snap with a mouse. Smart as they call it.
  • You can export a snap as a pdf (with or without pagination).

We’ll see, sad thing is – if me and LittleSnapper have a future ahead of us, I’ll probably have to spend 39$, 30 images is not a lot…

free vector japanese kokeshi dolls

Some time ago I drew a kokeshi doll in Photoshop (my flickr photostream or deviantART gallery).
Today I decided to redraw kokeshi in Illustrator (vectors rule!). kokeshis_gang
I ended up with a kind of a gang of five ready to whatever it takes to … (up to your imagination, reinvent them-professional-selves included). Maybe it’s me longing for the times when I had a huge support from my girlfriends.
Below you can see 2 vector kokeshi dolls that you can download and use for both personal and commercial purpose (a link/tweet/digg… would be nice :-) (and supportive ;-) !!!): blue kimono doll and dyed hair doll both in compressed .eps files.

my first doodle font

This was my first (mission accomplished) adventure with fonts. If only I liked my handwriting I would immediately turn it into font too. But so I don’t. I even came up with a trick so that it looks fancier: I write each letter in the opposite direction from what I’m used to. And sometimes it works.
… But anyway, there is a great (easy, fast and free) way to create your own handwriting font. Or you can make a doodle font as I did (if you like them feel free to download and use).
fonts_cup
And here is the precious link to where you can make your own font. You simply download a template, print it, fill in, scan and upload back. There is also a possibility to include special characters. (I did not – I decided to boycott them ;)).
